On Thursday night, Emmanuel Mensah, a United States Army soldier, made the ultimate sacrifice for his fellow Americans.
Every man or woman that joins the armed services knows that there is a small chance that they may lose their life fighting for our freedom and safety, but Mensah’s affiliation with the military had little to do with his passing.
He died because he saw a burning building with people inside, and he was one of the few people with the genuine heart for putting others’ well-being before his own.
According to The New York Post, Mensah passed out after rushing in and out of an apartment in the Bronx, helping take residents trapped inside to safety.
Mensah, 28, was home from basic training in Georgia and visiting a friend while on holiday leave when the five-story inferno took place. He was scheduled to head to Virginia, but he would never make it.
“That’s his nature,” Mensah’s father, Kwabena, told the New York Post.
“He was trying to help people out from the fire, and unfortunately he lost his life. He tried to do his best.”
He didn’t try to do his best — he did his best, and he did better than the majority of even the most courageous men.
“I understand when the fire was (going) he was trying to rescue… he had two or three people out,” his father said.
“He just came for the holidays. He helped his roommate’s wife and children, they were trying to come out to the stairs and he stopped them. He told them to come out the window… Then he went in and tried to rescue people out.”
His body was later found in the apartment building.
According to his father, when the family moved to the United States from Ghana five or six years ago, Emmanuel said that he wanted to join the Army.
“When he came here he just said, ‘Dad, I want to join the Army,’” Kwabena Mensah said.
He might have been a relative newcomer to the United States, but Emmanuel Mensah gave everything that a man can give for the safety of his fellow man.
He was a great American.
