Sometimes, it’s hard not to judge a book by its cover.
Making conclusions based on appearance — be it age, gender, race, or anything else before you get to know a person will just about always leave you not only completely wrong, but looking like a fool to boot.
A prime example of this is Paula Jo Taylor.
Taylor might seem like any other unassuming Tennessee woman of a certain age, but she’s not. She’s developed a special talent for years, and she’s still got some of the best chops around with her instrument of choice.
She’s a master guitar player.
At a National Association of Music Merchants event earlier this year, Taylor picked up an electric guitar and played some of the best music I’ve heard in months.
Take a look at the video below.
The entire clip is excellent, although she really starts to pick up after about 20 seconds in:
Taylor is no amateur. In fact, she plays regularly with her daughter, Amanda — they call themselves The Taylors. She was even once named as one of the top 10 female guitar players according to their promotional video shown below.
The duo has a Facebook following of more than 2,500 music lovers, and the more Paula Jo Taylor’s music is heard, the higher that number is likely to climb.
Here’s a promotional video for the duo. The production quality might be on the lower side, but the music more than makes up for it.
That’s what you get when you put years and years into a rewarding craft like mastering an instrument.
When she’s on the street, I’d be willing to bet that most wouldn’t guess that she’s a powerful musician.
It just goes to show you: You can’t judge a book by its cover.
